EMERGENCY NURSES AND HEALTH CARE ORGANIZATIONS HONORED FOR ACHIEVEMENTS
Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing Awards

NAPERVILLE, IL (September 22, 2016) – The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN®) presented four awards highlighting extraordinary efforts in promoting the value of the certification process in emergency nursing. The awards were bestowed September 16 during the Certification Recognition Breakfast sponsored by BCEN at the Emergency Nursing 2016 Conference in Los Angeles.

Kara Bauman, MN, RN, CEN, CPEN, TCRN, Fairfax, VA accepted the Distinguished Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN®) Award. Kara has provided excellence and inspiration as a mentor, building confidence and providing support for the emergency department (ED) team. Over the last 18 months, Kara has taken the initiative to coordinate and offer certification exam prep review classes for her emergency nurses. In this short period of time, more than 20 nurses have achieved the CEN credential.

Brian Johnson, RN, CEN, CPEN, Walnut Creek, CA, received the Distinguished Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN®) Award. As a Pediatric Liaison Nurse, Brian strongly encourages nurses to demonstrate their commitment, dedication and compassion when caring for the pediatric population by becoming a CPEN. Brian assures weekly posting of CPEN exam prep questions on the departmental bulletin board and recognizes their achievement by sending hospital wide congratulatory emails of their accomplishment. Brian has consistently and enthusiastically supported the nurses in their pursuit of the CPEN certification.

BCEN honored both a large and a small organization for their outstanding contributions toward promoting specialty certification in emergency nursing. The BCEN Honorary Certification Recognition Award was given to Avera McKennan Hospital Emergency Department, Sioux Falls, SD, and to Angel MedFlight, Scottsdale, AZ.

Over the past year, Avera McKennan had set a goal to increase the number of certified nurses in the ED. The organization provided a 2 day CEN review course as well as a Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN®) review course. A tuition reimbursement plan is available to assist with additional costs of preparation for the exam. Certification is rewarded with a bonus, congratulatory email, and recognition on the department’s certification board. As a result, 83% of nurses are certified with nearly 25% of those achieving their certification over the last year.

Angel MedFlight, a long range international air medical transport operation, supports certification for all clinicians, 13 of which are registered nurses and hold the CFRN credential. Preparatory courses and exam costs are provided at the company’s expense, in preparation for certification. All CFRN certified crew members are recognized with a monetary bonus and an additional day of paid time. This dedication to excellence has driven the organization to 100% CFRN certification for their registered nurses.
