Meet Kelly Speer: BCEN’s 2026 Distinguished CBRN Award Winner

On April 29, BCEN was proud to announce our 2026 Distinguished CBRN Award winner:

Kelly Speer, BSN, RN, CBRN

Registered Nurse

Vanderbilt Health

Nashville, Tennessee

What does this award mean to you?

This award is deeply meaningful to me. I am truly honored and grateful to have received this recognition. Caring for burn patients and their families is a passion of mine, and while this specialty presents unique challenges, it is equally rewarding. I am sincerely thankful for my colleagues in the burn center/burn clinic who have contributed significantly to my growth and development, as well as for my mentors and support system who have guided me throughout my career. Their knowledge, encouragement and dedication have shaped the nurse I am today.

Receiving this reward represents a significant milestone in my professional journey, and I am grateful for the opportunity to serve in a specialty that I value so deeply.

How has holding the Certified Burn Registered Nurse (CBRN) credential impacted your daily practice and your nursing career path?

Earning this BCEN credential has significantly enhanced both my daily practice and my overall nursing career. It has strengthened my understanding of burn injuries and their underlying pathophysiology, allowing me to approach patient care with greater clinical insight and confidence.

I currently practice at an American Burn Association (ABA)-verified burn center in the outpatient burn clinic setting. This credential has deepened my understanding of the rationale behind our clinical interventions and has reinforced evidence-based practice in my daily work. As a result, I feel more confident educating patients and families, as well as mentoring and training nurses who rotate through our outpatient clinic. The certification has also created opportunities for professional growth, including collaborating with providers to develop and enhance patient education materials.

When I first entered burn care, my knowledge was limited; however, through the guidance of my experienced nurse practitioners in the clinic and colleagues, combined with the advanced knowledge gained through this credential, I have been able to integrate clinical experience with a strong foundation in pathophysiology.

What difference has being board-certified in burn nursing made for your patients and their families?

This combination has strengthened my confidence, expanded my professional contributions, and enabled me to provide a higher level of care to burn patients and their families.

Being board certified in the burn nursing specialty has made a meaningful difference for my patients and their families. It has strengthened my ability to provide accurate, evidence-based education regarding burn care and has enhanced my confidence in addressing their questions and concerns.

Wound care is a significant component of my role, and certification has further equipped me to demonstrate proper dressing techniques while clearly explaining the rationale behind our treatment plans. This not only promotes better understanding but also supports adherence to care recommendations.

Additionally, I am able to empower families by helping them feel confident and competent when performing daily wound care at home. Patient and family education is one of the most rewarding aspects of my role in burn care, and achieving this certification has amplified my ability to positively impact their recovery experience. Overall, board certification has strengthened the quality of care and reassurance I am able to provide to those we serve.
