Here’s a quick look at Orlando Health ORMC’s certification support strategies and the outcomes they’re driving:

  • Sponsor CEN, TCRN and CBRN exam vouchers for ED nurses eliminates personal cost, promotes equitable access to certification.
  • Structured mentorship program with financial benefits—“Set the Pace” pairs mentees pursuing certification with certified mentors, rewarding both.
  • Intentional, data-driven strategy to grow certified RNs leading to greater nurse confidence, clinical competence, stronger peer collaboration, and higher retention.
  • Certification factors into professional development and evaluation, with certified RNs encouraged toward expanded roles, further elevating their leadership presence at the bedside.
  • Near-doubling of certification rate in one year, sustained the next—growth that’s building a highly qualified, specialty-prepared nursing workforce.

What does being named a BCEN National Certification Champion mean to your organization and the communities you serve?

It validates our commitment to nursing excellence, professional growth and delivering the highest quality emergency care to our community. It recognizes the dedication of our nurses and the culture of certification we have built at Orlando Health ORMC.

What sets nurses who have earned the CEN, CPEN, TCRN, CFRN, CTRN and/or CBRN apart in their daily practice and in their professional development and career trajectories?

Certified nurses demonstrate advanced clinical expertise, critical thinking and a commitment to lifelong learning. They often serve as clinical resources, mentors and leaders within the department while continually pursuing professional growth.

As your organization’s nurses earn an emergency, trauma, transport or burn specialty credential, what changes do you notice in them and the teams they work with?

We see increased confidence, stronger clinical decision-making and greater engagement in professional development. Their achievements inspire colleagues, strengthen teamwork and
contribute to a culture of excellence throughout the department.

What do you most want other healthcare organizations to know about why and how to support nursing specialty certification?

Supporting specialty certification is an investment in both nurses and patient care. Providing mentorship, educational resources, financial support and leadership encouragement helps build a highly skilled workforce and fosters a culture of continuous learning and excellence.

At Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center, we provide a comprehensive and highly effective system to support nurses in achieving and maintaining BCEN certifications through financial investment, structured mentorship, accessible educational resources, and measurable outcomes.

For nurses, this commitment has led to increased confidence, clinical competence, and professional engagement.

From a patient care perspective, higher rates of BCEN certification have contributed to improved clinical consistency and enhanced decision-making in high-acuity situations. Certified nurses bring specialized knowledge aligned with national standards, which supports safer, evidence-based care delivery, particularly in emergency, trauma, and critical care scenarios.

At the team level, certification has strengthened collaboration and peer support. The mentorship model has created stronger relationships among staff, encouraging knowledge sharing and fostering a supportive environment where nurses are invested in each other’s success. Certified nurses are frequently viewed as clinical resources within the department, enhancing interdisciplinary communication and contributing to a more cohesive, high-performing team.”
