Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) 2024-2025 Board of Directors Chairperson

On January 1, 2024, Allen C. Wolfe Jr., began a two-year volunteer term as chairperson of BCEN’s board of directors. Allen has been a member of BCEN’s board since 2015, and also continues to serve on BCEN’s CFRN/CTRN Exam Construction Review Committee (ECRC), which he joined in 2014. He began his volunteer service with BCEN in 2009 as a CFRN/CTRN exam item writer.

Allen has been a nurse for over 35 years, with 29 years in the transport of critically ill patients by air and ground. Since 2021, he has served as Senior Director of Clinical Education at Life Link III, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Prior to that, he was the Director of Clinical Education for Air Methods Corporation in Denver, Colorado, where he was responsible for the initial and recurrent training for 1,300 clinical employees at 160 helicopter bases. Earlier in his 2010-2021 tenure with Air Methods, he was a Regional Medical Service Director. From 1992-2010, Allen was a flight nurse, resuscitation clinician, and chief flight nurse with Washington Hospital Center’s MedSTAR (Medical Shock Trauma Acute Resuscitation) program. He began his nursing career as a critical care nurse in Arlington Hospital Center’s surgical ICU in 1986.

Allen is one of the leading U.S. experts in the prehospital management of Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs). He has published multiple clinical and research articles, led numerous research projects, presents and delivers lectures across the country, and is a co-editor of Patient Transport: Principles & Practice, the leading and industry best-selling textbook on air and ground transport nursing, now in its 6th edition.

He holds multiple national board certifications including three from BCEN: the Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN), the Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN) for ground transport nursing, and the Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN). Allen has been a CFRN since 2003 and a CTRN since 2016.

The recipient of numerous awards, some of which are listed here, Allen received the Katz-Mason Award from the Air & Surface Transport Nurses Association (ASTNA) in 2007, the Barbara A. Hess Educator of the Year Award from the Association of Air Medical Services (AAMS) in 2009, the Excellence in Community Service Award from AAMS in 2010 for his LVAD patient safety initiative, and also in 2010, ASTNA’s Jordan Award for outstanding contribution to air medical transport journalism. In 2017, he was honored with AAMS’s Marriott-Carlson Lifetime Achievement Award. He is a Past President of ASTNA (2014-15), and in 2022, he was a member of the inaugural class of the Academy of Air & Surface Transport Nurses.

Allen earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from George Mason University (Fairfax, Virginia) in 1984. In 2008, he earned a Master of Science in Nursing in Critical Care from Marymount University (Arlington, Virginia) and is a Clinical Nurse Specialist. In 2022, he completed Cornell University’s Diversity and Inclusion Certificate Program.
