On April 23, BCEN was proud to announce our 2025 Distinguished CBRN Award winner:
Amanda Kumar, BSN, RN, CBRN
Clinical Nurse III
UC San Diego Health Regional Burn Center
San Diego, California
What does this award mean to you?
I am honored, blessed and humbled, not only for being nominated but being selected as the first ever BCEN Distinguished Certified Burn Registered Nurse. Receiving this award is a reminder of why I chose this profession — to make a difference in the lives of those who need it the most. It fuels my motivation to continue growing, mentoring others, and providing the best possible care to my patients. This award is a reflection of my dedication, hard work, and passion for burn nursing. This achievement is not just a personal milestone, it is a testament to the incredible team I work with and the support system that has helped me along the way.
How has holding the CBRN credential impacted your daily practice and your nursing career path?
Obtaining the CBRN certification has significantly improved my daily practice and career path. It has increased my confidence and competence in handling complex burn cases, allowing me to make more informed decisions and deliver better bedside care. This certification has also improved my ability to educate patients and their families from the pre-hospital phase through acute care and rehabilitation. Additionally, it has opened doors for me to pursue advanced roles such as becoming a Clinical Nurse III, and provided opportunities for leadership and mentorship within my team. Finally, this award is more than a credential; it is a reflection my commitment to burn nursing and a motivation for my continued professional growth.
What difference has being board certified in burn nursing made for your patients and their families?
I work at a Level I Regional Burn Center where we serve all of San Diego County and extend care to neighboring regions. Our burn unit, which is ABA-verified, is equipped to treat a wide range of burn injuries and provide specialized care to both pediatric and adult patients across a large geographic area. Therefore, becoming CBRN certified has had a profound impact on the care I provide to both my patients and their families. Burn injuries are among the most painful and complex conditions to treat, requiring specialized knowledge and expertise to manage pain, prevent complications, and promote healing. Earning the CBRN has helped me enhance my ability to care for burn patients and offer support to them and their families during some of the most challenging and difficult moments of their lives.
Here’s what Amanda’s colleague and nominator, Clinical Nurse III Megan Zynkian, had to say:
“Amanda is an exemplary candidate for the BCEN Distinguished Award for many reasons, but first and foremost for her ability to inspire achievement of certification among her colleagues in the burn center.
Understanding the critical importance of specialty certification in advancing nursing practice, she developed an accessible and structured study course that empowers nurses on her unit to achieve certification and ultimately advance their careers. Amanda is known by her colleagues as someone who is ready and willing to help anyone at any time. Her positive attitude and caring demeanor have been instrumental in the success of her burn certification project.
Specialty nursing certification is essential for providing evidence-based care, which ties into ultimately improving patient outcomes. Through the curriculum development, leadership and dedication to the staff, Amanda is a true advocate for professional growth and a role model for nurses aspiring to advance their careers and enhance their practice.”
