Flight Nurse Practitioner for Vanderbilt LifeFlight at Vanderbilt University Medical Center & Assistant Professor of Nursing at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing
Nashville, Tennessee
What does this award mean to you?
Being nominated for and receiving the Distinguished CFRN Award is a significant milestone in my career. It serves as both recognition and validation of my dedication as a flight nurse and educator. This honor inspires me to continue striving for excellence in patient care while empowering others through education. I am deeply committed to advancing clinical practice and improving patient outcomes, and this recognition reinforces my passion for making a meaningful impact on our profession.
How has holding the CFRN credential impacted your daily practice and your nursing career path?
This year marks 20 years since I initially earned my CFRN, a credential I have proudly maintained as a testament to my dedication to my profession and community. Holding this certification continually validates my knowledge, skills, and commitment to excellence in patient care. It ensures that I am well-equipped to manage the diverse and complex situations we encounter as flight nurses.
As an educator, my CFRN allows me to better guide and mentor others as they prepare for this certification and work toward their professional goals. Additionally, when publishing and educating interprofessional audiences, my CFRN and other specialty certifications enhance my credibility as an expert clinician. Beyond clinical practice, this credential has also opened doors to invaluable relationships with colleagues across the country, fostering collaboration and growth within our profession.
What difference has being board certified in flight nursing made for your patients and their families?
Specialty education and certification are essential for maintaining competency and upholding the highest standards in our profession. The CFRN board certification assures patients, their families, and our colleagues that we meet rigorous standards of knowledge, skill, and professionalism.
As flight nurses, we often encounter people during some of the most challenging and stressful moments of their lives. Referring clinicians and families frequently express relief when the flight crew arrives, confident that the patient is in highly capable hands. Specialty certification helps ensure that I am prepared to provide expert care in critical situations, ultimately improving patient outcomes and providing reassurance to referring clinicians and families during difficult times.
Vanderbilt LifeFlight’s Clinical Services Senior Director Sherri Dean, MHA, BSN, RN, said:
“Dr. Gooch has impacted countless lives through education of flight nurses and the patients in their care. He has truly dedicated his life to the relentless pursuit of excellence in the profession. In addition to his commitment to nursing advancement he is always willing to help anywhere he can be of service. We are so fortunate to have Dr. Gooch as part of the LifeFlight team.”
Michael was nominated by two of his Vanderbilt LifeFlight colleagues. Here’s what they had to say:
“Dr. Gooch works as a flight NP for one of the top flight programs in the country and is seen as a clinical resource within the flight program as well as the adult ED…He is seen as the subject matter expert not only within the LifeFlight program but also in the adult ED at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for all things related to the CEN and CFRN tests.
I know dozens of nurses who credit their successful completion of board certification to him. In addition to this, he actively flies for Vanderbilt LifeFlight as a nurse practitioner while still balancing a busy teaching schedule with the Vanderbilt School of Nursing and at conferences around the nation. His achievements within the academic and clinical settings are vast, yet he remains approachable and humble.”
– Flight Paramedic James Aeschliman
“Michael has excelled in his career, embarking on multiple paths to include bedside care and providing education at Vanderbilt as well as across the globe. Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s flight program, Vanderbilt LifeFlight, was challenged with making a change over the last two years requiring all of the flight nurses to obtain the CFRN to retain their accreditation under CAMTS. Michael was instrumental in that success by providing multiple review courses aimed at preparing providers with the knowledge needed not only to pass the test but to thrive in their career.
Vanderbilt University School of Nursing is lucky to have such a talented individual not only preparing students for nursing care but also showing them what they can accomplish as they continue with their career. … In the few days he does have off, he’s travelling across the country to give lectures. He does it all!”
