BCEN Celebrates Certified Emergency Nurses on Certified Nurses Day
Free Nurse Recognition Toolkit, New Practice Exams Now Available
OAK BROOK, IL (March 19, 2019) – The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) joins employers, nurses and nursing organizations, and local communities around the world in celebrating Certified Nurses Day today by recognizing the professionalism, leadership and commitment to excellence of BCEN-certified nurses practicing in emergency, transport and trauma nursing settings.

Board certification is the nursing profession’s highest professional credential. National board certification validates a nurse’s knowledge, expertise and clinical judgment within a specialty area. Patients are encouraged to inquire whether there are board certified nurses on staff when they visit a hospital or other healthcare provider. Nurses earning BCEN’s credentials have the CEN, CPEN, CFRN, CTRN and/or TCRN designations after their name, signifying they are among the elite practitioners of emergency nursing.
Free Nurse Recognition Toolkit, New Full-Length Practice Tests Among Popular Resources
In support of emergency nurses seeking to earn and maintain their board credentials, BCEN created a free nurse certification recognition toolkit and introduced new, full-length practice exams.
• The free nurse recognition toolkit available at https://bcen.org/inspired/ contains nurse appreciation posters, flyers and stickers plus social media and press release templates so hospitals and other employers can recognize their certified emergency nurses inside their organizations and throughout their communities any day of the year.
• BCEN’s new full-length practice exams for its CEN, CFRN, CPEN and TCRN certifications are written by expert, practicing BCEN-certified nurses. The interactive, mobile-friendly practice tests operate in study and certification mode, include correct answer rationale and a reference list for each question, and are available at https://bcen.org/practice-exams.
• Other BCEN resources for nurses, nurse leaders and hospital administrators include test anxiety tips, a discount exam voucher program and evidence-based white papers on the value of certification.
Value of Certified Emergency Nurses
Research, including BCEN’s 2017 large-scale Value of CEN Certification Research Study, shows that board certification of nurses both helps ensure high standards of care for patients and plays a significant role in the career success and satisfaction of nurses. “In our large-scale study, 92% of nurse supervisors said it is important to have certified emergency nurses in their organization, and 93% said it is important for emergency nurses to maintain their certification,” added Schumaker.
Founded in 1980, BCEN offers five board certifications for registered nurses who practice adult/mixed emergency, pediatric emergency, flight, critical care ground transport and trauma nursing. The Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), widely regarded as the foundational emergency nursing certification, is held by nearly 38,000 registered nurses (RNs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs).
