Mt Laurel, NJ, (September 7, 2023) —The Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC), is pleased to announce that the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN®) has been granted reaccreditation for the Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN®) certification program. The TCRN credential was introduced by BCEN in 2016 and was granted initial accreditation from ABSNC in 2019. Today, there are over 7,500 TCRNs worldwide. In order to earn the TCRN credential, RNs must demonstrate mastery across the trauma nursing specialty body of knowledge, which spans the trauma care continuum including injury prevention/education, prehospital care, acute care, rehabilitation and reintegration into society. Trauma is a major, global public health issue, and trauma nurses play a major role in delivering trauma care. Founded in 1980, the independent, not-for-profit Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN®) currently offers the Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN®), Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN®), Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN®), Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN®), and Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN®) certifications, all of which are accredited by ABSNC. BCEN’s new burn nursing certification, the Certified Burn Registered Nurse (CBRN), will be widely available in Q4 2023. “Reaccreditation of the TCRN national trauma nursing certification program is important to credential holders, candidates, trauma programs and healthcare institutions,” said BCEN Director of Certification and Accreditation Amy Grand, MS, RN, ICE-CCP. “It demonstrates BCEN’s ongoing commitment to excellence and advancing the trauma nursing specialty.” ABSNC accreditation is a peer-reviewed mechanism that allows nursing certifying organizations to obtain program accreditation by demonstrating compliance with the highest quality standards in the industry. To maintain accreditation, programs must exhibit continuing adherence to the 18 standards set forth. “ABSNC Accreditation represents a recognized standard in certification testing and indicates that the credential meets or exceeds legal and regulatory guidelines,” said Felicia Lembesis, CAE, Executive Director. The mission of ABSNC is to recognize quality specialty nursing and associated non-RN certification programs through accreditation. It is the only accrediting body specifically for nursing certification. ABSNC currently accredits more than 60 certification programs from 20 specialty nursing certification organizations. The accreditation standards offered by ABSNC include Examination-Based Certification Programs, Portfolio Assessment Certification Programs, and Assessment-Based Certificate Programs.
