BCEN Earns Fifth Brandon Hall Group™ Excellence Award® With 2025 Win for Innovative Emergency Nursing Education

BCEN’s CEN Review Course Earns Bronze for Best Custom Content

OAK BROOK, IL (September 4, 2025) – The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN), the benchmark for certification across the emergency spectrum, has earned its fifth Brandon Hall Group™ Excellence Award® since 2021. This year’s Bronze Learning and Development Award for Best Custom Content recognizes BCEN’s Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) review course, which is offered on the BCEN Learn nursing professional development platform.

Previous Brandon Hall recognitions for BCEN and its BCEN Learn platform — known for delivering high-quality clinical and leadership continuing education for RNs specializing in emergency, trauma, critical care transport and burn care — include a 2024 Gold award for Best Learning Leader and three Bronze awards in 2021 for Best Advance in Creating a Learning Strategy, Best Learning Team, and Best Advance in Custom Content.

“I’m very proud of this course because there is nothing quite like it on the market,” said BCEN CEO Janie Schumaker, MBA, BSN, RN, CEN, ICE-CCP, CENP, CPHQ, FABC. “Whether nurses are preparing to sit for the Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) exam or are new to nursing, our comprehensive and interactive course connects the dots between the information and why it is important in emergency nursing.”

This year’s winning entry, “Innovative Online Training for Emergency Nurses,” focuses on the CEN Review Course: Essentials of Emergency Nursing, launched by BCEN on March 19, 2024 (Certified Nurses Day). Structured around the 10 core content areas of the Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) exam content outline, the course offers a comprehensive, flexible learning experience for RNs preparing for CEN certification, earning continuing education (CE) credits, or refreshing emergency nursing knowledge. Rich in interactive elements, high-quality visuals, and knowledge checks to reinforce learning and retention, the course also includes a printable study guide to support note-taking, and is designed to support a variety of learning styles and preferences. The course offers 21 CE credits, which are eligible for CEN renewals.

“Being recognized alongside leading global industries for excellence in innovative online education validates the efforts of developing a comprehensive review course,” said BCEN Director of Professional Development Michael Dexter, MSN, RN, CNL, CEN, CFRN, CPEN, CTRN, TCRN, CCRN, EMT. “Our objective was to thoroughly address the material in the CEN exam content outline within a flexible format suitable for certification exam preparation, while also providing extensive continuing education content to support certified nurses in advancing their expertise.” Dexter, who oversees BCEN Learn and the BCEN Learn team, was honored with the 2024 Brandon Hall Gold award for Best Learning Leader.
